Terry Smith


Terry is an assistant professor in Elementary Education at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. His university teaching includes science, educational technology, social studies, and supervising student teachers. Before teaching, he was a technical writer specializing in operating systems and networks. After fourteen years in the elementary classroom, where he used a project-based learning approach, he made a change from K-12 to higher education, earning his doctorate in Learning Technologies from Pepperdine University.

To promote educational global experiences, he currently runs two Internet projects: The Monster Project and The Kidlink Landmark Games. He served on the National Geographic steering committee for the Geo-Educators program, and is a trainer for the National Geographic Educator Certification program. The most fun he’s ever had in education was taking his 4th graders to Taiwan.

Sir Ken Robinson, the English author and speaker best known for his wisdom on education and creativity via his TED Talks, once said: “You can't just give someone a creativity injection. You have to create an environment for curiosity and a way to encourage people and get the best out of them.” So it is with participants in this 2016 Flat Connections Project. Students come to this event ready to express themselves with short video productions. They have accepted the challenge to interpret invention, innovation, application, and human behaviors influenced and molded by ongoing technology trends. Curiosity is the starting point as students consider questions about badges and motivation, about plastics and printers, about devices that foster collaboration, about technologies that save people’s lives, and about the environment in which we all reside.

As a reviewer, I am genuinely impressed with the work and passion that these fresh minds invested in their creations. I am keenly aware that this group is living in the midst of the phenomena that they are describing, experiencing these technological influences and impact not as new changes so much, but instead as a norm of their time. As Sir Ken Robinson suggested, this project provides a venue of structured encouragement and curiosity that indeed brings the best out of the students.

1.1B.9 BYOD Impact on Education at All Levels by LaurenB_dfhs



This video holds the viewer’s attention throughout. The character holding the iPad was immediately engaging, attracting the viewer’s attention. A clean technical flow supported the video while incorporating a kind of Michael-Wesch style for relating the message – typed, backspaced, new words, and onward. Technical quality was good; animated text ran at a good pace for understanding, and matched the rhythm of the background music. The message was very well explained as a solid case was made for BYOD. The conclusion with the multi-scene changing background created a visual sense of possibility and promise.

A strength of this video is its simplicity of design. The message goes directly at the environment, using clear, well worded, gliding text screens. Even though we often think of 3D technology as the future – this video maker made some very strong points that should be considered before charging ahead on the flash of technology. Technically, the production is professional, pace good, text displays appropriate and well timed. The video maker clearly has a talent for this kind of creativity. She offers a view that is balanced and informative. It is a wise view that sees this technology as in its infancy.

The video has a positive, energetic feel and brings out a relationship that many people might not have realized – the more people who want to exercise, the more attention is paid to variables that affect the environment, such as bicycle riding instead of driving cars. And fitter people will tend to eat healthier foods which can be connected to an increased economy for vegetable farms. The Greenlivingideas.com reference was especially applicable and shows how this video maker interpreted and blended information into the media message. Her text messaging scene was an excellent way of emphasis, of demonstrating a main point. We watch as a smart phone user responds to a request to play video games. Her text: “No thanks. Do you want to come take a hike with me and take some cool videos?”

2.2D.6 Makerspaces by Caitlin
A strength of this video is that you identified the generic uses of maker spaces as being able to create things, then you went on the show possible examples. By the act of creating is when we begin to understand innovation – first we must start, we must make something and that is the story your video tells.

4.4C.1 Adaptive Learning Technologies by Dhruv Ohri
The narration in this video was professional, clear, and distinct. His software demonstration with the voice-over was effective and showed his comfortability with this topic. Excellent points were articulated about how technology can adjust to individual learners' needs.

These awards go to the best multimedia works. Student work will be assessed against two criteria related to the objectives of the Flat Connections Global Project. A winner, runner up, third place and honorable mention (if appropriate) has been awarded in each of the SIX major topics.
